Elgar’s Cello Concerto

I’m lucky enough to be familiar with this work and consider it to be one of Elgar’s finest. In just the first ten seconds it evokes a drama and tension that other pieces have to build up over several paragraphs and very soon we find ourselves enveloped in a familiar and comfortable aural landscape where, due to the comparative simplicity of the piece, we don’t have to work too hard, just hear what the composer has to say.

Quite lovely.

Hear an adequate rendition here or search out one of the du Pre recordings.
